Company history

A group of artists and professionals with their eyes on the world and their feet on stage

Madame Rebiné is a contemporary circus company born in 2011 in Toulouse, from a project started in Turin thanks to the meeting of Andrea Brunetto, Max Pederzoli and Alessio Pollutri at the FLIC Circus School. The team has trained at renowned European schools (Ésacto’lido in Toulouse, Balthazar in Montpellier, Katakomben in Berlin, Escola Luthier in Barcelona) and has more than ten years of productions that allowed it to keep training under the guidance of directors such as Mario Gumina, Andrea Fidelio and Roberto Magro.

Over time the collective has developed its own form of contemporary performance languages, balanced between innovation and tradition, poetry and comedy, physicality and word, virtuosity and simplicity. Its shows are suitable for a cross-section of audiences both age-wise and culturally, and year after year they explore different themes in different ways while retaining the freshness and lightness of a game among friends.

Special attention is paid to street theater, with the aim of bringing quality performances to varied audiences as well, going beyond the simple logic of entertainment.

Since 2011 to date, Madame Rebiné has collected more than 500 performances across festivals, theatres and circus tents, continuing to renew its artistic vision and connection with audiences.

The association

From the first laughter in Toulouse to a nationally acclaimed association

Starting in 2021, after years of touring activity, Madame Rebiné chose to settle in San Quirino (PN) and evolve into a cultural association to shape new projects rooted in the local soil. Not only performances, but also shared projects, educational experiences and lasting relationships with the community.

The association was born out of a desire to express its poetics through broader, everyday actions, enhancing the encounter between art, involvement and caring for places. Its guiding principles are inclusion, empathy, dialogue between generations, spreading beauty and curiosity, critical sense and sharing. Founded by artists, artisans, designers and communicators, it is made of professionals who share a passion for art and life in general. Thanks to its experience and the quality of its proposals, the association immediately got the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture as an enterprise of contemporary circus and innovation.

The first project carried out, RICÒ – Shows at San Quirino, marked the beginning of a dialogue with local institutions and cultural entities in Friuli Venezia Giulia. As always, in Madame Rebiné style: seriously, but lightheartedly. Like a game among friends.

The history of the circus

ANCIENT CIRCUS
(up to 300 A.D.)
In ancient Rome, the circus was part of the ludi, large public festivals. It was used to celebrate military victories, show the valiance of soldiers, and entertain citizens. It was an exotic, astonishing, majestic, and propagandistic spectacle. Many acrobatic elements were derived from the Etruscan tradition.
MODERN CIRCUS
(late 1700s)

In 1777 Philip Astley, a former soldier, opened the first stable circus in London, combining horsemanship, acrobatics and comedy. In 1827 Paris also has its first permanent circus. It was a period of great splendour: alongside refined shows (with examples of complex dramatics), popular forms proliferated at fairs and in squares.

TRADITIONAL CIRCUS
(since 1850)

It is the circus with the marquee: the one that fuels the romantic imagination, but it represents only part of the story. It was born out of practical necessity, first in America, then it spread to Europe thanks in part to Sinti communities. The marquee becomes a symbol of an alternative, nomadic, spectacular world. Familiar structure, exceptional numbers, “extraordinary” creatures and a strong carnie tradition. In Italy it spread widely.

NOUVEAU CIRQUE
(1960 to 1990)

In France, the circus changes face: fewer animals, fewer family hierarchies, more creative freedom. The circus becomes one of the languages to express the social struggle of the time. Spectacle is no longer an end in itself: it opens a dialogue with theatre, dance, music.

CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS
(from the late 1900s)

Beginning in 1986, a number of contemporary circus schools emerged in France, in which other disciplines were taught in addition to circus techniques. Circus is ennobled, established, and also goes back into theatres. Dramaturgical research, métissage with other stage disciplines, circus pedagogy. The bond that binds circus exclusively to popular performance is broken. Contemporarily, circus also continues to live on in its “traditional” form and in towns squares.
